Angry protesters set fire to the central office of the banned Awami League in Gulistan, Dhaka.
The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Thursday (November 13), when demonstrators gathered and set the party office ablaze.
Earlier, to resist the Awami League’s announced “lockdown” program over the upcoming verdict in Sheikh Hasina’s trial, activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir gathered in front of the party’s central office in Gulistan.
At the scene, a banner of Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra Shibir was seen hanging, and the activists were seen standing under it with national flags tied around their heads and sticks in their hands.
On August 5 last year, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, enraged students and citizens vandalized and set fire to this same central office of the Awami League. After remaining abandoned for months, the building was later turned into the “Institute for the Study of International Fascism and Genocide” by organizations aligned with the July People’s Uprising.
Notably, the International Crimes Tribunal has scheduled the verdict on November 17 (Monday) in the case of crimes against humanity committed during the July-August movement, involving ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
At 12:09 p.m. on Thursday (November 13), the date was set by the Tribunal-1 bench headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, along with Justice Md Shofiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
The prosecution team included Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tazul Islam, Prosecutors Mizanul Islam, Gazi M.H. Tamim, and Faruk Ahmed, among others.
Security has been tightened across Dhaka and nationwide ahead of the verdict announcement.
