Bangladesh created history by defeating India after a long wait of 22 years in the Asian Cup qualifiers. On Monday night at the packed National Stadium, the men in red and green displayed discipline, confidence, and fighting spirit. The early lead they secured in the 11th minute ultimately sealed the long-awaited win.
India dominated possession in the opening minutes, but it was Bangladesh who found the breakthrough. In the 11th minute, Rakib Hossain delivered a well-measured pass from the left, which Sheikh Morsalin calmly finished. It was his seventh goal for the national team—and the moment that set the tone for a historic night.
The match heated up in the 34th minute when Bangladesh’s Topu Barman and India’s Vikram clashed, leading to a brief scuffle. The referee showed both players yellow cards. Earlier, a defensive mistake nearly put Bangladesh in danger, but Hamza Choudhury came to the rescue with a crucial headed clearance inside the box.
Just before halftime, Hamza’s powerful long-range effort narrowly missed the target, denying Bangladesh a chance to double the lead. Bangladesh went into the break 1–0 ahead.
India came out attacking in the second half, creating a few half-chances. However, strong defensive performances from Sad Uddin, Topu Barman and substitute Shakil Ahad kept India at bay. Despite dominating ball possession, India failed to level the score.
A major moment of controversy came in the 83rd minute when the ball appeared to strike an Indian defender’s hand inside the box. Bangladesh strongly appealed for a penalty, but the referee dismissed the claim. Still, Bangladesh maintained control and composure.
Coach later introduced Shahriyar Emon and Taj Uddin to strengthen the midfield and defense in the final moments. In added time, Bangladesh denied India any real chance of scoring and held firm until the final whistle.
As the referee blew for full time, celebrations erupted across the stadium—Bangladesh’s memorable victory against India after 22 long years. Morsalin, Hamza, and the entire team emerged as the heroes of this historic night.
