Rickshaw Driver Sujon Files Nomination for Dhaka-8 Seat Jolied Rickshaw driver Mohammad Sujon, who gained attention in July, has collected the nomination form from the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) to contest the Dhaka-8 parliamentary seat. Gold Prices Fall, New Rates Effective from Friday Gold prices in the country have dropped, according to the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS). The price of 22-carat gold has been reduced by BDT 1,353 per bhori, bringing the new rate to BDT 208,167. The revised price will take effect from Friday (21 November). BAJUS announced the change in a statement on Thursday (20 November) night, citing a decrease in the price of pure gold in the local market and overall market conditions as the reason for the adjustment. 10 Days Left to File Tax Return: NBR Explains How to Submit Online The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has made it mandatory for regular individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns online. The deadline to file tax returns for the fiscal year 2025–26 is 30 November. Only 10 days remain before the deadline. Currently, there are around 11.5 million TIN holders in the country. Taxpayers with taxable income are required to submit their returns. NBR has urged all taxpayers to file their 2025–26 income tax returns within the stipulated time. Here’s how taxpayers can submit their returns online from home: Step 1: You must have a TIN To submit a return, an e-TIN is mandatory. If you don’t have one, you can register quickly at etaxnbr.gov.bd. Step 2: Visit the online return submission website To file returns online, go to etaxnbr.gov.bd, where you can fill out the return form, submit it, and download the receipt. Step 3: Create an account if it’s your first time For registration, you will need: TIN number National ID number Mobile number Email Use these details to create an account and log in. Step 4: Fill in the income tax return form Provide the following information in the form: Total income Tax deducted at source Details of tax exemptions (e.g., medical expenses, donations, insurance) Asset details For salaried employees, filling out the form is easier with the salary slip at hand. Tension in Tribunal During Cross-Examination of Key Witness Abjalul Tension arose at the International Crimes Tribunal during the cross-examination of prosecution witness SI Sheikh Abjalul Haque in the case filed over the killing of seven people, including the burning of six bodies in Ashulia during the July uprising. A dispute between prosecution and state defense lawyers over a specific question led to nearly an hour of heated arguments. The incident took place on Thursday (20 November) around 11:30 a.m. before a two-member bench of Tribunal-2, led by retired district and sessions judge Md. Manjurul Baschid. Earlier, around 10:30 a.m., the cross-examination of witness Abjalul began in the case against 16 accused, including former MP Saiful Islam. During the cross-examination, defense lawyer Mizanur Rahman asked whether any police officer from the station had been killed on 5 August last year. The witness replied that although no one from the station died, an officer from another unit had been killed, and he was involved in the investigation but could not complete it. Prosecution lawyers immediately objected, saying the question was irrelevant. This led to prolonged arguments between prosecution and defense. The situation later calmed following the tribunal’s intervention. The case names 16 accused, including former MP Saiful Islam. After Abjalul’s cross-examination, testimonies from two to three more witnesses are expected. The case will then proceed to the argument stage. Testimony is expected to conclude by mid-next month. On 15 September, the first day of testimony, the witnesses included Rezwanul Islam, brother of martyr As Sabur, and Khalilur Rahman, father of martyr Sajjad Hossain Sajal. Earlier, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam delivered the opening statement, detailing the brutal killings that took place in Ashulia on 5 August last year. On 2 July, the prosecution submitted formal charges along with 313 pages of documents, a list of 62 witnesses, 168 pages of evidence, and two pen drives. The tribunal later took the charges into cognizance. Among the eight arrested are former Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & Ops) Md. Abdullahil Kafi, former ASP Shahidul Islam, Inspector Arafat Hossain, SI Malek, SI Arafat Uddin, ASI Kamrul Hasan, Abjal, and Constable Mukul. However, former MP Saiful Islam and seven others remain fugitives. On 5 August last year, six young men were shot dead by police in Ashulia. Their bodies were later placed in a van and burned. One victim was found alive but was also killed by pouring petrol and setting him on fire. A case was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal on 11 September, accusing the perpetrators of crimes against humanity.

Application to File Case over Alleged Defamation of Tarique Rahman Dismissed The Dhaka Cyber Tribunal has dismissed an application seeking to file a case over alleged defamatory remarks made on Facebook about BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman. Judge Mohammad Saidur Rahman Gazi issued the order on Thursday (20 November). Iltutmish Saudagar, joint general secretary of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum, submitted the application on Wednesday. After recording the complainant’s statement, the court set Thursday for delivering the order. State prosecutor Rafiqul Islam said the tribunal dismissed the application as the allegations did not fall under the Cyber Security Act. According to the complaint, Tarique Rahman said during a virtual rally on 12 November, “Given the current situation, ensuring the fair price of potatoes is more important than holding a referendum.” Following this, on 15 November, the accused, Shahin Mahmud, posted a comment from his verified Facebook account addressing Tarique Rahman: “If you had given farmers the 88 crore taka instead of buying a bulletproof car, they would have received a fair price for onions and potatoes.” The complaint claimed that the accused’s comment was false, reckless, and intentionally aimed at tarnishing Tarique Rahman’s political dignity, honour, patriotism, and foresight. It also stated that no bulletproof car had been purchased for 88 crore taka. The application claimed offences under Sections 23(2), 25(1), 27(1), and 27(2) of the Cyber Security Act 2025. However, the tribunal rejected the application, ruling that the allegations were not legally admissible.

New Date Announced for BPL Player Auction The uncertainty surrounding the BPL player auction has finally come to an end. After multiple rescheduling attempts, the BPL Governing Council has officially announced a new date. ‘No Need to Shoot, Hitting in the Chest with a Brick Will Kill Him,’ Audio Goes Viral Barely a recovery from the murder of Sarwar Hossain Babla in Chattogram, a new audio has surfaced revealing another murder plot and a disturbing criminal syndicate. The audio, circulating widely on social media, reportedly captures Ekram Hossain, known as a police source, planning the killing of Nasir Uddin Chowdhury. In the leaked audio, a conversation between Ekram and Chattogram’s Sajjad Ali Khan, also known as Boro Sajjad, is heard: “No need to shoot Nasir, hitting him in the chest with a brick will kill him.” Ekram further says, “I will video him being killed. Then I’ll hit him with a chopper and record that too. I’ll make a full package—killing after killing.” Ekram accuses Nasir of controlling bars and businesses in the New Market area, allegedly extorting 2–3 lakh taka from owners each time. He is also said to be active in protecting the business interests of some local Awami League leaders. Attempts to reach Nasir Uddin on his mobile went unanswered. Nasir, listed with RAB and police, was arrested in 1998 and served 26 years in prison before being released in 2023. Since his release, he has allegedly been involved in extortion, tender grabbing, and asserting dominance in the area. Locals say Ekram has long maintained fear and control in the area by leveraging his police source identity. The audio leak has spread panic, highlighting the activity of a major criminal network centered around extortion and murder plans. Notably, on the night of November 5, Sarwar Hossain Babla was shot six times at close range by a gunman while accompanying BNP candidate Ershad Ullah during election campaigning in the Khalikatoli area of Khondokar Para, Baily Road Thana. Laldia–Pangaon Terminals: Two Foreign Companies to Receive 10-Year Tax Exemption The two foreign companies awarded the responsibility to operate the Laldia and Pangaon container terminals will enjoy a 100% tax exemption for the next 10 years, National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan has announced. He clarified that this is not a new incentive but a continuation of an existing government order. Speaking at an event in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday, the NBR chairman said that as part of the newly signed agreements for Laldia and Pangaon terminals, the operators have been granted full tax exemption. Not only the companies, but their foreign technical staff will also enjoy tax-free privileges. Additionally, royalties, dividends, and technical knowledge fees payable to the companies will remain outside the tax net. He pointed out that the government already offers extensive tax incentives across various sectors, including economic zones, EPZs, and hi-tech parks. “If we continue granting indiscriminate tax exemptions to entities that are supposed to pay taxes, how will we ensure direct tax collection?” he questioned. According to an existing 2017 Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO), investors in 12 categories of infrastructure projects under Public–Private Partnership (PPP) are entitled to a 10-year full income tax exemption. These projects include national highways, expressways, flyovers, river ports, seaports, airports, rail lines, bus terminals, bus depots, tunnels, monorails, and old-age homes. Another order states that foreign technicians employed in such projects are eligible for 50% tax exemption on their income for the first three years. Notably, on November 17, the interim government signed agreements to hand over the Laldia terminal in Chattogram and the Pangaon terminal near Dhaka to foreign operators—marking the first-ever instance of long-term leasing of major port infrastructure to foreign companies in Bangladesh. APM Terminals BV, a Netherlands-based subsidiary of Denmark’s A.P. Moller–Maersk, signed a 30-year concession agreement with Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) to develop and operate the Laldia terminal. According to the PPP Authority, the company will invest USD 550 million (approximately Tk 6,700 crore) in construction, equipment supply, and related work during the first three years. It will also pay Tk 250 crore as signing money.

Why India Won’t Extradite Sheikh Hasina: Al-Jazeera Analysis In a case over crimes against humanity during the July uprising, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. ‘OC Sayed and ASI Biswajit Set Six Bodies on Fire Using Petrol’ — State Witness Abzalul State witness and former police officer Sheikh Abzalul Haque has apologized to the International Crimes Tribunal for failing to prevent the brutal killing and burning of six youths in Ashulia during the July-August movement. He sought forgiveness on Wednesday (19 November) after giving his statement before Tribunal-2, led by retired district judge Md. Manjurul Basid. On the same day, Abzalul testified against former MP Saiful Islam and 15 other accused in a case involving the killing of seven people, including the burning of six bodies in Ashulia. Although he was not present during the burning itself, he said he learned of the incident on 15 August when he went to deposit his service weapon at the police station. According to his testimony, then Ashulia Police Station OC Sayed and ASI Biswajit poured petrol on the six bodies and set them on fire. Following his deposition, Abzalul asked the tribunal for forgiveness. Earlier, on 21 August, Tribunal-2 framed formal charges against the 16 accused and ordered the trial to begin. Seven of the eight accused present in court pleaded not guilty, while SI Abzalul admitted his involvement and applied to become a state witness. His confession was formally recorded, and he was granted permission to testify for the prosecution. After charges were framed, 14 September was set as the date for opening statements and recording witness testimonies. On that day, the tribunal rejected the accused’s discharge pleas and formally read out the charges. ‘I Was Detained on an Adviser’s Instructions’ — Journalist Sohel Mizanur Rahman Sohel, Online Head of Dainik Bhorer Kagoj and Secretary of the Online Editors’ Alliance, has alleged that he was detained on the instructions of a government adviser. In a post from his verified Facebook account on Wednesday (19 November), Sohel said he was kept in DB custody for nearly 10 hours without any charges. He wrote that around midnight on Tuesday, 5–6 DB officers forcibly picked him up from his home, saying the DB chief wanted to speak with him. At the DB office, his name was entered as an accused, and he was kept in a cell with other detainees—yet no one could explain why he had been arrested. Sohel claimed that a government adviser ordered his detention to help only nine mobile phone traders establish a monopoly in the market. He added that Abu Saeed Piyas, Secretary of the Online Editors’ Alliance, was also detained and remains in DB custody. A press conference by Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB) on the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) was scheduled to be held on Wednesday at the DRU. Sohel was the media consultant for the event. According to him, the main intention behind his detention was to stop that press conference. In his post, he wrote that NEIR contradicts the country’s free-market policy and the objectives of the Competition Commission. He alleged that a deep conspiracy is underway to destroy the livelihoods of 25,000 mobile phone traders across the country for the benefit of only nine businessmen. DU Deputy Registrar Muhammad Lavlu Mollah Sent to Jail Muhammad Lavlu Mollah, Deputy Registrar of Dhaka University (DU), has been sent to jail over allegations of financing a rally organized by the banned Awami League. On Tuesday, the investigating officer of the case, SI Alamin of Shahbagh Police Station, requested the court to keep Lavlu Mollah in custody. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia, after hearing the case, denied bail and ordered him to be sent to jail. According to the case details, on May 31 at around 6:30 a.m., members of the banned Awami League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, and the prohibited Chhatra League held a rally in the Poribagh area of Shahbagh, chanting slogans against the interim government. Police intervened, and participants dispersed. The case was filed on June 1 by SI Kamal Uddin Mia of Shahbagh Police Station, with Lavlu Mollah named as an accused. Earlier, following the death sentence verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the July–August people’s uprising case, Lavlu Mollah posted a supportive photo card of her on social media. This post triggered unrest, leading DU students to gather outside his residence on Monday night, after which Shahbagh police detained him. Shahbagh Police OC Khalid Monsur stated that Lavlu Mollah’s post read: “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu, I don’t care.” The post created tension, prompting the university’s proctorial team and police to take him into custody at night. Port Protection Council Threatens Strong Action if Decision Not Withdrawn The Port Protection Council held a torch rally in protest against handing over the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) and Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) to foreign companies. They warned that if the decision is not withdrawn within 40 hours, a press conference will be held on November 20 to announce a tough action plan. The rally took place on Tuesday (November 18) evening along the Port Connecting Road in the city’s Boro Pol area. Workers raised slogans such as, “My port, my mother; we won’t give it to foreigners,” “We fight to survive,” and “DP World go back.” At the subsequent gathering, Hasan Maruf Rumi, a member of the Political Council of the People’s Solidarity Movement, addressed the crowd. He said the Chittagong port was built with taxpayers’ money, yet there is a conspiracy to hand over profitable terminals to foreign companies under the guise of development. A recent report shows that the port’s revenue has increased by 21 percent. He emphasized that foreign trainers can be brought in to improve efficiency, but the government has no right to lease the country’s assets under the pretext of efficiency. Rumi also stated that although an interim government was formed for justice, reform, and elections, no real reform has been seen. Handing over NCT and CCT to foreigners would ignite protests across Chittagong and the country. Any contract against national interest will not be accepted by the people. Speakers added that NCT and CCT are self-sufficient and profitable terminals that do not require foreign investment. Leasing such terminals abroad would result in the country’s dollars leaving the economy. While foreign investment in Bay Terminal is acceptable, NCT and CCT should never be handed over to foreign companies. They warned that if the decision is not withdrawn, a strict action plan will be announced at a press conference on November 20.
